Tested, ranked, and compared — find the right service for your needs
We spent three weeks testing six reverse phone lookup services in early 2026 — running the same set of 50 phone numbers (landlines, mobile, VoIP, and prepaid) through each platform and comparing accuracy, depth of results, pricing, and overall user experience. This is what we found.
The short version: Spokeo is the best overall pick for most people. It has the largest searchable database, the lowest entry price, and returns results that are genuinely useful. If you need deep background checks beyond a phone number, Intelius edges ahead. If you run a lot of searches, BeenVerified's unlimited plan offers better value at scale.

Price: $6.95/month (phone lookup plan) · $19.95/month (people search) · Single reports from $0.95
Spokeo was founded in 2006 and has grown to aggregate data from over 12 billion public records pulled from social networks, public records databases, white pages directories, court records, and marketing data brokers. In our testing, Spokeo returned a name, address, and at least partial social profile for 41 out of 50 test numbers — an 82% hit rate, the highest of any service we tested. Where it particularly shines is on landlines and listed mobile numbers registered with a carrier — results are fast and detailed, often showing the owner's full name, current address, relatives, and age.
The pricing model is more accessible than competitors. For $6.95/month you get unlimited phone lookups specifically. If you also want to search by name or email, the $19.95/month plan unlocks all search types. The interface is clean and modern, results load in under three seconds, and the mobile experience is well-optimized. Spokeo also lets you preview that results exist before charging — you see the city/state and record count before committing.
The main limitation: Spokeo's background check depth is shallower than Intelius. You'll get criminal records if they exist, but Intelius's reports are more thorough on courthouse-verified data. For pure reverse phone lookup, however, Spokeo is the clear leader. We also appreciate the 75% commission structure they offer publishers — a strong signal that the business is healthy and invested in growth.

Price: $19.95/month (Premier) · $9.95/month (basic) · Single reports from $1.99
Intelius has been in the people-search business since 2003 and has built arguably the most comprehensive background check reports of any consumer-facing service. While it costs more than Spokeo, the additional depth is real: Intelius pulls from county court records in all 50 states, sex offender registries, bankruptcy filings, liens, and professional license databases. In our testing, Intelius matched Spokeo closely on basic name/address returns (79% hit rate) but significantly outperformed on background check depth — for numbers where we knew the owner's background, Intelius surfaced 60% more court records than BeenVerified.
The reverse phone lookup specifically gives you the owner's name, current address, previous addresses (up to 10 years), and family members. For many searches, it also returns associated email addresses and a brief employment history. Reports are presented in a clear multi-section layout with a PDF download option, which is useful if you need documentation.
Intelius is worth the higher price if your primary use case involves vetting someone you're considering doing business with, renting to, or dating. For pure "who called me" queries, the extra cost over Spokeo isn't justified. The platform does not offer a phone-specific pricing tier — all plans include all search types.

Price: $17.48/month (annual plan) · $26.89/month (monthly) · No per-report pricing
BeenVerified launched in 2007 and has positioned itself around unlimited searches with a subscription that covers phone, name, email, address, and vehicle history lookups — all in one plan. If you're searching multiple numbers regularly (investigators, property managers, HR professionals doing informal pre-screens), this all-in-one value proposition is compelling. At $17.48/month on annual billing, it's the cheapest path to truly unlimited searches across all data types.
In our accuracy testing, BeenVerified scored 76% on our 50-number test set — slightly below Spokeo and Intelius. Where it fell short was on older listings and numbers registered to businesses rather than individuals. The mobile app (iOS and Android) is genuinely well-designed and is the best mobile experience of any service we tested — useful if you need to run a lookup quickly while on the go.
BeenVerified also includes a dark web scan showing if your personal information has appeared in data breaches, and an automated opt-out tool that can submit removal requests to data broker sites on your behalf. These extras add real value to the subscription beyond raw search volume. The annual plan commitment is the main drawback — if you only need a few searches, the per-month cost isn't competitive with Whitepages or Spokeo's single-report pricing.

Price: $28.05/month (monthly) · $13.98/month (annual) · No per-report pricing
TruthFinder differentiates itself with a strong focus on dark web data exposure monitoring alongside standard people search. If you're concerned about your own digital footprint — or want to understand someone else's exposure — TruthFinder surfaces data breach information alongside the standard contact/background data. The interface is polished and the mobile app is solid, but the accuracy on pure reverse phone lookup is lower than our top three picks, and the $28.05/month sticker price makes it the most expensive option at full retail. Annual pricing brings it down to $13.98/month, which is more reasonable. For most users, Spokeo or BeenVerified offer better value.

PeopleFinders has been around since 1999, making it one of the oldest services in this space, and it shows both in the breadth of historical address data and in the somewhat dated interface. Where it genuinely excels is address history depth — if you need to track previous residences going back 15–20 years, PeopleFinders often has records that newer services don't. The pay-per-use option ($3.95/search) is also worth noting if you need occasional lookups without a commitment. For regular reverse phone lookup use, the accuracy (72% in our testing) and user experience don't justify the $24.95/month price when Spokeo provides better results for less.

Whitepages is the most recognizable name in phone lookup and remains useful for occasional searches — at $1.99 per mobile phone lookup, it's the cheapest single-search option available from a reputable provider. The database is solid for landlines and publicly listed numbers (Whitepages has been aggregating this data since 1997), but coverage of newer cell phones and VoIP numbers has fallen behind subscription competitors that continuously ingest fresher data. The $29.99/month Pro subscription is hard to justify when BeenVerified and Spokeo offer better databases for less. Stick with Whitepages for a one-off lookup when you don't want a subscription.
Visit Whitepages →Our methodology involved running a curated set of 50 phone numbers through each service. The test set included 15 residential landlines, 20 active cell phone numbers (all major carriers), 10 VoIP numbers (Google Voice, Vonage, Zoom Phone), and 5 prepaid/burner numbers. We scored results on three criteria: (1) whether a name was returned, (2) whether the address was current and accurate, and (3) whether secondary data (relatives, email, social profiles) was present and accurate. All testing was conducted between January and March 2026.
We also evaluated the user experience — how fast results loaded, how easy the interface was to navigate, how clear the pricing was at checkout, and how easy it was to cancel. Cancellation ease is an important consumer protection metric that doesn't always get covered, so we note it in individual reviews.
Reverse phone lookup services are legitimate tools for a wide range of personal and professional uses. Common scenarios include identifying missed calls and unknown numbers, verifying that someone you've met online is who they say they are, checking whether a number calling your elderly parent is a known scam line, and reconnecting with old contacts whose numbers you have but whose names you've forgotten. Landlords and small business owners also use these services informally (though official tenant or employment screening requires FCRA-compliant services).
If you're looking for free options first, our guide to free reverse phone lookup covers what's available at no cost and where free searches fall short. We also maintain a broader reverse phone lookup comparison that tracks pricing changes and database updates quarterly.

Subscriptions range from $6.95/month (Spokeo's phone-only plan) to $28.05/month (TruthFinder monthly). Single report pricing ranges from $0.95 to $4.99. Free options exist but typically return only basic carrier/location data without owner identity.
Yes, for personal use it is entirely legal. These services aggregate publicly available information. They cannot legally be used for FCRA-regulated purposes: employment screening, tenant screening, or credit decisions. All major services state this clearly in their terms of service.
