Types of Phone Scams

Complete List

Phone scams come in dozens of varieties, but they all rely on the same basic tactics: urgency, fear, and impersonation. Here are the most common types targeting Americans today.

Government Impersonation Scams

The caller claims to be from the IRS, Social Security Administration, Medicare, or another government agency. They threaten arrest, license suspension, or benefit cancellation unless you make an immediate payment. Reality: Government agencies always initiate contact by mail and never demand immediate payment by phone.

Financial Institution Scams

The caller impersonates your bank, credit card company, or investment firm. They claim suspicious activity on your account and ask you to "verify" your identity by providing account numbers, PINs, or passwords. Reality: Your bank will never call and ask for your full account number or password.

Tech Support Scams

A caller claims to be from Microsoft, Apple, or your internet provider, saying your computer is infected with a virus. They request remote access to your computer. Reality: Tech companies do not monitor your computer and will never call about problems unsolicited.

Romance and Emotional Scams

After building a relationship (often online), the scammer calls with an emotional emergency requiring money. Grandparent scams, romance scams, and emergency bail scams all exploit emotional connections.

Prize and Lottery Scams

You're told you've won money, a vacation, or a prize, but must pay "taxes" or "processing fees" to claim it. Reality: Legitimate prizes never require advance payment.

Healthcare and Insurance Scams

Callers offer discounted health insurance, free medical equipment, or COVID-related benefits to collect your personal health information and insurance IDs for fraudulent billing.
